Our History
North Bombay Durga Puja Sarbajanin Charitable Trust was founded by Mr.
Shasadhar Mukerji of Bombay Talkies, Mr. J. M. Bhadra, and other family members
and like-minded people of the Santacruz area. The founding committee consisted of
26 members, led by Mr. Shasadhar Mukerji as its President.
Our North Bombay Sarbajonin Durga puja is one of the oldest and grandest puja in
Mumbai which was founded in 1948 by Padmashri Sashadhar Mukerji and his wife
Smt Satirani Mukerji. The first puja took place in Sri Mandal Hall in Santacruz, since
then it has flourished and grown bigger with active member participation. Over the
years it has maintained its 'Gharua' roots, where all are welcome to be part of the
family.
Sashdhar, a Hindi films producer and a Padma Shri awardee, for his contributions to the fields of art and entertainment, was part of the distinguished Mukerji clan of Bollywood, He is also described as the founder of Filmistan studios. The Trust organised its first Durga Puja at Street Mandal Hall, Poddar School Santacruz. In the early years Sri Ram Ghosal took the responsibility of Secretary till the year 1973 then Shri Ram Mukerji followed by Mr. Sanat Chakraborty and now Mr. Deb Mukerji is the flag bearer. The event was a harbinger of similar events over the decades, which saw the Trust's popularity growing spectacularly
Historically many Bollywood artists including Joy Mukerji, Asha Parekh, Sadhna,
Sanjiv Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Hemant Mukherjee, Bela
Mukherjee, Bappi Lahiri, Rani Mukerji, Kajol, Ayan Mukerji, Sonu Nigam, Shaan,
Pritam, Shankar Mahadevan, Alka Yagnik have participated and performed during the
entertainment concerts at our Pandal.
Currently, our idol of Maa is 17 feet long, the biggest in Mumbai. It is sculpted by
Amit Pal and his team from Kolkata. We have a massive digital following and the
count of footfall crosses 5 lakhs year on year.
